Hells Canyon Scenic Byway
The Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is a designated National Scenic Byway that passes through Union on its route from La Grande to Baker City via the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The byway offers stunning views of river canyons, mountain meadows, and rugged terrain, with access to Hells Canyon — the deepest river gorge in North America.
Eagle Cap Excursion Train
The Eagle Cap Excursion Train operates seasonal scenic rail excursions along the Grande Ronde and Wallowa rivers between Elgin and Joseph. The historic rail line passes through some of the most spectacular and remote scenery in northeast Oregon.
Anthony Lakes
Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort, located west of Union in the Elkhorn Mountains, offers skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing in winter, and hiking, mountain biking, and fishing in summer. The area features alpine lakes and forested trails at elevations above 7,000 feet.
Union County Museum
The Union County Museum in downtown Union preserves and interprets the history of Union County and the surrounding region. Exhibits cover Native American heritage, pioneer settlement, mining, logging, ranching, and the development of the Grande Ronde Valley.
Eastern Oregon Livestock Show
Held annually in Union, the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show is one of the oldest livestock events in the region. The show features rodeo events, livestock exhibitions, a parade, and community gatherings that celebrate the area’s ranching heritage.

Climate
Union experiences a four-season climate typical of northeast Oregon’s high valley setting. Summers are warm and dry with daytime temperatures commonly reaching the 80s and 90s (Fahrenheit), while winters are cold with regular snowfall and temperatures often dropping below freezing. Spring and fall bring mild, transitional weather ideal for outdoor activities. The area receives an average of approximately 17 inches of precipitation per year, with most falling as snow during winter months.
