Water and Sewer Rates
The following rates are based on meter size. Each meter size includes a base allotment of water usage measured in cubic feet (CF). Usage beyond the included amount is billed as overage.
| Meter Size | Water Base Rate | Cubic Feet Included | Overage per 100 CF | Sewer Base Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3/4” | $35.72 | 600 | $3.21 | $55.74 |
| 1” | $64.28 | 1,200 | $3.21 | $111.48 |
| 1-1/2” | $128.58 | 2,400 | $3.21 | $222.96 |
| 2” | $214.28 | 4,200 | $3.21 | $334.44 |
| 3” | $432.90 | 6,000 | $3.21 | $891.68 |
Understanding Your Bill
Each utility account is assigned a meter size that determines the base rates for both water and sewer service. The water base rate includes a set number of cubic feet of water usage each month. If your usage exceeds the included amount, you are billed an overage charge of $3.21 per 100 cubic feet for each additional 100 CF consumed.
Sewer charges are a flat monthly rate based on meter size and are not affected by water usage.
Residential Equivalent Units (REUs)
The City of Union uses the concept of Residential Equivalent Units (REUs) to determine utility rates for different meter sizes. A 3/4-inch meter represents one REU and serves as the baseline for residential service. Larger meters are assigned proportionally higher rates based on their capacity relative to the baseline.
Current rates are established by Ordinance No. 508 (water) and Ordinance No. 515 (sewer).
Billing Example
A residential customer with a standard 3/4-inch meter who uses 1,200 cubic feet of water in a month would be billed as follows:
- Water base rate (includes first 600 CF): $35.72
- Water overage (600 CF over the included amount = 6 units x $3.21): $19.26
- Sewer base rate: $55.74
- Total monthly bill: $110.72
