Budget

The City of Union prepares an annual budget in accordance with Oregon Local Budget Law (ORS 294). The budget is the city’s financial plan for each fiscal year, which runs from July 1 through June 30.

Budget Process

Oregon law requires that a Budget Committee review and approve the proposed budget before it goes to the City Council for adoption. The City of Union Budget Committee is composed of the City Council members plus an equal number of citizen members appointed to serve three-year staggered terms.

The budget process generally follows these steps:

1. The Budget Officer prepares a proposed budget.
2. The Budget Committee holds public meetings to review the proposed budget and hear public comment.
3. The Budget Committee approves the budget, which may include revisions.
4. The City Council holds a public hearing on the approved budget.
5. The City Council adopts the budget, makes appropriations, and sets the tax levy.

All budget meetings are open to the public. Residents are encouraged to attend and provide input on city spending priorities.
